A Great Beginner Distro -
Linux Mint with either Cinnamon or MATE Desktop Environment (MATE is recommended for beginners).
Another Beginner Distro -
Ubuntu-mate Linux a user-friendly operating system that “just works”.

Antix Linux a user-friendly operating system that “just works” on older machines.

MX-Linux for older, less powerful x86 machines.

Puppy Linux is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured.
The standard Ubuntu Linux distribution is NO LONGER RECOMMENDED for beginners, because of GNOME 3, Snaps and Unity.
However, the more traditional styled desktop environment using Ubuntu repositories and MATE at
this site is a very good choice.
